Earth Day, also called International Mother Earth Day, began in the US in 1970 as a day to celebrate
the planet and encourage people to become more environmentally friendly. It is now an 
annual event that is widely regarded as the beginning of the modern environmental movement. It recognizes that “the Earth and its ecosystems are our home” and that “it is necessary to promote harmony with nature and the Earth.”

The term Mother Earth is used because it “reflects the interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet we all inhabit”. The day is annually commemorated around the world on April 22 as International Mother Earth Day.
Earth Day 2017’s Campaign is Environmental & Climate Literacy
The 2017 campaign theme for Earth Day is “Environmental & Climate Literacy”. Education is our foundation for progress. We need to build a global citizenry, which is fluent in the concepts of climate change, and aware of its unprecedented threat to our planet. We need to empower everyone with knowledge to act in defense of environmental protection.

- Think that every day is Earth Day
- Always recycle and reuse, don’t consume
- Compost your garbage, keep it out of landfills
- Turn off lights when you are not using them
- Take less showers and use less water
- Use recycled paper
- Turn off the water while your brush your teeth
- Use a refillable water bottle
- Support local farming, farmer’s markets and organic produce
- Only buy food you are going to eat
- Contribute to reforestation — plant a tree
