Two Years Later: BiOWiSH® Sustains Improved Effluent Quality

What can BiOWiSH® Aqua help you accomplish in two years?

To find out, this study followed the long-term effects of BiOWiSH® Aqua in a slaughterhouse in South Korea. They introduced BiOWiSH® Aqua into their water treatment process to help them meet stricter effluent standards.

With help from our partners at Smart Bio Korea (SBK), the slaughterhouse turned an environmental challenge into an ongoing success story. Read the details below, or read the full case study here.

The search for wastewater treatment solutions

Located in the Choongchung province, the slaughterhouse struggled to meet new, stricter environmental standards put in place by the Korean Environmental Office. The industrial park that housed the slaughterhouse was declared a clean environment control zone, so effluent standards became tougher.

While environmental standards were changing, the need for plant processing capacity increased. The slaughterhouse was processing 1600 pigs a day. However, higher rates of production came with a new challenge: more waste was being generated. Their increased success was tempered by higher waste removal costs.

To balance the higher processing rates with the new environmental standards, management was facing significant capital expenditures and third-party operating fees. They were considering a costly plant expansion when they discovered a different, more cost-effective solution.

With support from our partner SBK, the slaughterhouse made a change with BiOWiSH® Aqua.

Wastewater from the slaughterhouse had high levels of BOD, COD, SS, TN, and TP that needed to be reduced, fast, to meet regulations. With SBK, the slaughterhouse developed and implemented a 10-week bioremediation plan using BiOWiSH® Aqua.

Within only six weeks of BiOWiSH® implementation, effluent met discharge limits. Within 10 weeks, all key measurements improved even further. The data from the beginning of the slaughterhouse’s wastewater success is below. For full details about the initial implementation, read the year one South Korean slaughterhouse case study here:

How did BiOWiSH® Aqua help improve wastewater treatment so dramatically? By using the same all-natural technology that powers all BiOWiSH® products. Read on to learn how this amazing microbial solution works.

How does BiOWiSH® Aqua Work?

BiOWiSH® Aqua allows water treatment officials, like the ones in this slaughterhouse, to strengthen the microbial ecology in wastewater tanks.

When plant officials implemented BiOWiSH® into their water treatment process, they introduced BiOWiSH’s proprietary blend of beneficial microorganisms. These microorganisms shift the microbiome so that the beneficial microbes outcompete less useful bacteria. They act as a catalyst to speed up the biological removal of nutrients.

BiOWiSH® helps enhance the living ecology inside treatment tanks, and this capacity can drive long-term changes. That’s exactly what happened at this South Korean slaughterhouse. These dramatic results compelled the slaughterhouse to continue to use BiOWiSH® Aqua to take control of their wastewater outcomes.

Long-term BiOWiSH® benefits for industrial wastewater

What does success look like two years into a BiOWiSH® treatment program? For this slaughterhouse, success means improved effluent quality and plant stability. Since their implementation of BiOWiSH® Aqua, levels of BOD, COD, TN, and TSS have remained at or below required standards.

That’s not all: BiOWiSH® empowered our partners at the slaughterhouse to keep up with their increased plant capacity without additional infrastructure, so they reduce expenditure. Over time, as the plant has become more stable, the slaughterhouse was able to reduce dosing costs by 50% and still achieve the same consistent results. BiOWiSH® makes sense environmentally and economically. Plus, because BiOWiSH® is powered by all-natural technology, it is absolutely safe for the environment.
